The section is engaged in immediate dissemination of news related to the daily activities of the State Government. It handles news and photo coverage of official programmes of Chief Minister and other ministers; co-ordination of official programmes through SMS alert; co-ordination of press conferences of Chief Minister and other ministers; media coverage for press meet of Chief Minister and other ministers; issuance of routine press releases, special press releases, news follow-ups, directions, notifications to all media through facilities like e-mail, print, fax even on holidays. Timely publication of press releases and photographs through official website of the department; publication of special releases on the occasions like anniversary celebration of the government, Kerala Piravi etc.; organising special press meets; preparation and distribution of press accreditation, editorial accreditation, press facility and press identity cards and timely renewal of these cards; co-ordination of media during VVIP visits like providing special identity cards issued through police department, providing vehicle facility for media for coverage; providing special identity cards issued through General administration department during Independence day and Republic day celebrations organised by the State; organising press tours to sites of news value in situations of crisis; organising seminars , workshops or other related programmes on special occasions to commemorate special media/press days; complete responsibility of selection and distribution process of State Media Award and Swadeshabhimani- Kesari Puraskaram; maintenance of Press Room and PR chamber; liaison work to strengthen the bond between media and the government and to strengthen the bond between inter-state media in terms of government policies; Media co-ordination among the offices of Chief Minister, other ministers, secretaries, Niyamasabha and Speaker; functions overtime during Niyamasabha sessions; Media centres are arranged for Sabarimala-Mandalavilakku festival, Onam celebrations, International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) etc.; Special Media Cells function on polling and counting days; Special programmes are organised to commemorate the State government’s anniversary celebrations; Distribution of government publications like official invitations for various functions, Media handbook, Government Diary, Calendar etc. to media organisations; Publication of state-wide results of examinations, dissemination of information even after respective duty time to media, through various services like telephonic communication; media co-ordination during the time of demise of VVIPs; Advices and suggestions on the matters of press/ media at State level and Subscription rate for News agencies are the responsibilities of Information Officer (Press Release). He/she is also entrusted with dissemination of information under RTI Act as State Assistant Public Information Officer for the department.
The Scrutiny wing is entrusted to scrutinize the feedback from the public on the performance of the government. Press summaries are prepared daily through scanning press cuttings and are sent online to offices of all Ministers; giving feedback to government by scrutinizing the web-radio-television news programmes; digitizing newspapers and other documents for further scrutiny; archives special issues for reference; produces feedback report to government on conducting public surveys on government policies and schemes; availing press cuttings to VVIPs during their official visits and the departments concerned; feedback from district level compiled monthly basis and are forwarded to the director, Chief Minister, other Ministers; availing reference documents for departments and various commissions appointed by the government; publication of Economic News Digest; monitoring of grievance redressal facilities regarding cable TV Network Act. In general, the section has the responsibility of gathering responses from the public on policy matters and to report it to the ministers concerned.
Monitoring and managing the contents of official web portal of government of Kerala, district web sites and the department site; timely updation of official site; auditing the contents of various government websites; and act as deputy web master for official web portal of government of Kerala.
In addition the division manages Information Public Relations Department’s website (prd.kerala.gov.in), minister’s websites, RTI website etc. A portal exclusively for news feed www.keralanews.gov.in is also maintained by the division.

Photography section is mainly a repository of photographs highlighting subjects of national importance of the State and its rich cultural heritage. The section mainly handles photo coverage of official programmes/ public functions all over the State, in association with press release section. Availing photographs for the publications of Information and Public Relations Department and other departments; conducting photo exhibitions on special occasions like Gandhi Jayanthi, Kerala Piravi etc.; archiving of news photos, personalities and events highlighting the State’s socio-economic-political-cultural scenario; indexing of colour transparencies and negatives; appointment and co-ordination of contract photographers in other districts; keeping of account statements for the distribution of photographs and albums on paid/ free basis; purchase and distribution of photographic accessories to other districts; inspection of photographic accessories; liaison with photography sections of other departments; and provides media assistance in consensus with photographers in district information offices to coordinate the functioning of the division.
Video coverage of government programmes throughout the State; distribution of edited video footages to various television channels through clipmail- a web platform; production of news/development-oriented programs for audio-visual media; coordination of the video stringers in other districts; technical support to the video clip mail system in directorate and district offices; supervision of the video news logging; video coverage of programmes in the State capital and maintenance of an edit suit for news clipping services. 1. Cultural Development:
Organises various cultural event, fairs and festivals, film festivals; co-ordinates inter-state cultural exchange programmes; distribution of 35 mm films, audio-video CDs and DVDs; maintenance of film library/archives; organises various cultural programmes in consensus with various cultural organisations in other States as part of promotional activities of the State’s cultural diversity; maintenance and monitoring of Tagore Theatre; purchase of films and documentaries.
2. Field Publicity and Exhibition:
Coordination of exhibitions, mobile exhibition unit, IT enabled video wall, field publicity activities, public awareness programmes; intensive campaigns on special occasions like Gandhi Jayanthi, Reading Day, Reading week etc.; coordination of State team deputed for Republic Day Parade in New Delhi; multi-media campaigns for India International Trade Fair (IITF), New Delhi; Event management and coordination for State Media Award; event management for seminars/workshops organised by the department; special campaigns on the occasion of anniversary celebrations of the State cabinet; and acts as controlling officer for vehicles on duty from directorate.
Two monthlies- Janapatham in Malayalam and Kerala Calling in English are published by the department. Annual subscription fee for each magazine is Rs. 120/-
1. English Editorial:
Data compilation, writing, translation, editing, proof reading, layout, design, communication with writers, co-ordination with press, fixation of remuneration to writers for Kerala Calling magazine, Heritage series publications, Handbook on Kerala, various reference books etc.; publication of books highlighting the achievements and welfare programmes of the government; publication of booklets reflecting developmental and cultural arena of the State, and other works in English published by the department. Also the division monitors the online version/publication of Kerala Calling.
2. Malayalam Editorial:
Publication of Janapadham, other Malayalam publications and reference books; data compilation, writing, translation, editing, proof reading, layout, design, communication with writers, co-ordination with press, fixation of remuneration to writers for Janapadham magazine, and other works in Malayalam published by the department; publications on official language; special issues on the anniversary celebrations of the government; books on contemporary subjects, subjects seeking public awareness; organises debate on contemporary issues etc. The division also monitors the online version/publication of Janapadham.
Printing and circulation of all publications of the department as per prepared mailing list; work-order allotment and management; release of work-order for outsourcing (colour) films for printing in government press; assessment of printing status of publications at all stages; distribution of publications through mail to subscribers included in mailing list; distribution of publications through courier service to district information offices; maintaining a stamp register and mailing list for circulation purpose; redressal system to resolve complaints regarding circulation; circulation of posters, booklets, and other publications through district information offices; maintains records of printing and circulation, publication of posters, booklets and handouts etc.; circulation of publications to Chief Minister, other ministers, opposition leader, Niyamasabha Speaker, Members of Legislative Assembly, secretaries etc.; State-wide circulation of all publications of department, circulation of publications to the New Delhi Information Office; identifying market for the publications; transportation of printed materials from the press and timely circulation to the Ministers, Government Secretaries and media persons; and informing the departments and institutions about the details of the publications are the important activities carried out by this section.
Maintaining a State Information Centre for responding to queries related to government schemes offered directly or via telephone. It has a reference library with a good number of books from the State and the Central government and is availing books for public, students and media persons through reference library; availing dailies and gazettes for public, students and media persons, etc. Co-ordination of training programmes for department personnel; arranging unpaid internship for media students; publication of election guide, district handbooks and media handbooks; assistance to publications of Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India; execution of Press and Registration of Books (P.R.B) Act; keeping registers for dailies, periodicals; circulation of publications and periodicals; information centre facility; reference library; circulation of books and other materials for reference to the department staff; filing copies of newspapers and periodicals for future reference; keeping list of department heads and important personalities etc.
In addition to State Information Centre attached to the Research and Reference Section the department maintains information centres in all districts providing high-end facilities for research and reference.
SutharyaKeralam, an interactive video conferencing programme, is intended for the speedy disposal of public grievances. Citizens can lodge their grievances/petitions related to any department in Government of Kerala through the Call Centre which functions 24x7.

Production and release of electronic media advertisements for various government departments like video-audio-web display ads; fixation of advertisement rates and payment of bills; marketing of department produced ads through other agencies; distribution of ID cards to personnel of electronic media marketing division; production and distribution of electronic media advertisements for other departments; technical support for other departments in advertisement production; preparation of media list for electronic media through scrutiny; marketing of pre-commercial time allotted to department; marketing of audio-video productions of department; disbursement of payment bills to concerned departments.
