The Group
Established in 1969 with Kanhailal as its founder director,
Kalakshetra has evolved a distinctive theatrical style that is
predominantly non-verbal. The group is dedicated towards expressing
the realities of oppression and resistance that are a part of
day-to-day living in Manipur today, and does so through the medium
of plays of like Pebet and Memoirs of Africa. Some of the group’s
major productions have been Draupadi and Izzat, Kama and Lajja
and Kshudito Pashan.
Heisnam Kanhailal
Has been active in theatre for the four decades as a
playwright, director and actor. Conducted actor-training workshops
all over the country and worked with international theatre groups.
Has also conducted a research project for the formulation of a
new actor-training methodology with the help of the Ford Foundation.
Recipient of State award for theatre, Kendreeya Sangeeth Natak
Academy Award, Natyaratnam from Manipuri Sahitya Parishad apart
from Padmasree.
